My son and I have just completed our PADI Open Water Diver course with Hertfordshire Dive Club (HDC), and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. At 13, my son was eager to learn scuba diving due to his interest in marine life. Both of us were complete beginners. While he was excited, there was some natural nervousness about learning to breathe and feel comfortable underwater. We initially started with another dive club, but the distance made it impractical for us to continue. Choosing to switch to HDC turned out to be the best decision. From our first session, we knew we were in the right place. Steve and Alan, our instructors, were truly fantastic. They were encouraging, patient, and supportive throughout the course. A major highlight was how they treated my son. Despite his young age, they treated him like an adult, attentively answering his questions and never making him feel like age was a barrier. This approach made him confident and included. The course posed more challenges for me personally, as I had previously struggled with buoyancy at the other club, leaving me a bit anxious. Again, Steve and Alan proved exceptional. They patiently helped me overcome my challenges, understanding my struggles and working with me at my own pace without pressure. My son loved the pool sessions, and it was amazing to see both of us gain confidence as the course progressed. The highlight was completing our open-water dives at Stoney Cove. Being dive buddies made the experience even more special, creating lasting memories as we dived together. The atmosphere at HDC was another great aspect. Everyone we met was friendly and welcoming—not just the instructors—but fellow students and club members as well. There was a genuine sense of camaraderie, with everyone keen to help each other succeed, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the course. We’re thrilled to have chosen HDC for our PADI Open Water course. The instructors, the support, the friendly environment, and the overall experience were fantastic. We would eagerly recommend HDC to anyone considering diving, especially parents with children interested in scuba diving. A huge thank you to Steve, Alan, and everyone at HDC for making our introduction to scuba diving such a positive one. I have just returned from a weekend at  Stoney Cove after completing my open water scuba qualification. I had an amazing experience completing my course. John my course instructor was highly knowledgeable, patient and incredibly supportive throughout, making me feel comfortable and confident both in the water and during the theory sessions. Alan, who also supported us in the pool, was clearly an extremely experienced diver and instructor. He was able to share his knowledge and skills in a clear and supportive way, ensuring I fully understood each stage of the training. His guidance and encouragement made the whole experience as easy and enjoyable as possible. A huge thank you to John and Alan for their encouragement, professionalism and passion for diving throughout the six-week course. I would also like to thank Alan and Steve for their support, guidance and expertise during our weekend at Stoney Cove. Finally, a thank you to Tony, who provided surface support with such a calm and reassuring approach. The course was well organised, informative and great fun. Learning new skills, exploring underwater and discovering the amazing world beneath the surface was an unforgettable experience. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to try scuba diving or take their first steps into the underwater world. If you’re thinking about starting diving, then this is definitely the club for you! I have really struggled to get my head around diving and everything it entails, but the care, kindness and support I have received from HDC has been second to none. I would like to say a huge thank you to **John, Donny and James** for all their support in the pool. But I want to give **Kevin and Tory** a massive shout-out for the incredible support they gave me at Stoney Cove. Without them, I honestly don’t think I would have passed. I honestly cannot recommend this dive team highly enough. During my Open Water course I experienced cold shock at the surface and was extremely distressed (not my finest moment) but the way the team handled it was exceptional. My instructor John was calm, reassuring, and completely focused on my safety, helping me regain control and keeping a very close eye on me throughout. The Divemasters Simon, Tory, and Helen were equally supportive, attentive, and professional. At no point did I feel judged or embarrassed, only safe and cared for. I also really enjoyed the pool sessions, which were excellent. Everything was explained clearly and patiently, and that solid foundation made a huge difference to my confidence. Despite a challenging situation in open water, I still completed and passed the course, which says everything about the quality of instruction and support from this team. If you want a dive school that genuinely prioritises safety, compassion, and clear teaching, especially when things don’t go perfectly, this is absolutely the place to go. Safe to say I’ve learned that cold UK water isn’t for me, but I’m incredibly grateful to this team for getting me through the course with care and professionalism. HDC is a great club. Weekend away is well organised and the team works very hard to make sure everything is in place to learn and to enjoy. Their experience and communication are fantastic, it just makes you want to progress and dive more. They are so knowledgeable! I organised a trial dive for my teenage son and 4 friends.  Tim and the team were very professional and put them all at ease.  The website was easy to navigate, had all the information I needed and Steve quickly answered any questions I had beforehand. Herts Dive Club instructors were very welcoming and accommodating for a new diver like myself. They provided all equipment and bespoke guidance throughout the weekly pool dives so as to improve my technique ahead of the open water dive weekend. All the instructors - Donny, John, Kevin, Steve, Bruce, Gary & Tori are absolute professionals. They advised on which equipment to use and made the open water dive weekend an amazing experience. I am looking forward to joining the club as a member in the coming weeks and am very excited for my open water dive in Australia as well as the opportunity to join diving holidays planned by the club.
